Rushing to get to the store, you have already skipped lunch and are salivating thinking about dinner! There you see the fresh baked muffins as soon as you walk in, you reach to throw them in the cart, then you grab the icecream that is on sale, holiday candy, or your fave bag of chips! Before you know it you have a cart full of unhealthy items and a bill twice as much as what you were planning to spend! Stop right there and check out some tips for shopping success...
Never go hungry- save yourself money and unwanted calories by going to the store on a full stomach
Bring a list- use an old fashioned pad and pen or your notes section on your phone, write down everything you need to create healthy meals during the week. You will stay on track with meal plan and save moneyby not making impulisive choices
Shop the perimeter of the store- most food in a clean eating plan will be located on the perimeter of the store. Veggies, fruits, lean meats , eggs, and low-fat dairy products all are on the perimeter.
Add it to your calender- book your weekly shopping trip in your calender, just like a workout or a nail appointment. Once it is in your calender you are less likely to make excuses about why you can't go and you end up with a large pizza and bottle of wine on a Wednesday night!
Get prepped- its not enough to go to the store and throw everything in fridge, if you want to get something done , you need to do it right! Wash all your fruits and veggies, chop them so they are ready to eat or cook with, prep any meats and portion out meals
Look at nutrition labels- don't just read the marketing labels on the front, you can't judge a book by its cover, and you can't make healthy choices by trusting the cover of a box! Look for things like trans fats, ingredients you can't pronounce the names of , added or hidden ssugars like high fructose corn syrup or brown rice syrup
Hoping these tips make you start a new shopping habit! If you are uncertain how many calories you should be consuming , I will be happy to write you a meal plan! And if you are reading this and saying to yourself, "I will do that after the holidays", my advice is do it now and save yourself that extra 5-10lbs the average American puts on during the holiday season! Having a guide will keep you on track and when you go to a holiday gathering understanding calories you may rethink your plate! Indulge but be ready to get back on track Monday!
